Albert Einstein said, "Try not to become a man of success, but a man of value". I can think of no other RN that is of more value to our patients and families than Cynthia Norrod. She goes above and beyond in her job daily to ensure the needs of patients are met. Whether this is coordinating follow-up appointments, prescription issues, or simply offering reassurance to worried moms.
A patient's father called with concerns about a prescription that was prescribed while his son was in the ED. The father said that his son was seen for an ear infection and was given an antibiotic and an ear drop medication. He said they were not able to get the ear drops from the pharmacy because they were too expensive. The father said that blood was coming out of his son's ears and that he was in serious pain.
I followed up with Cynthia in the ED. Cynthia shared with me the website goodrx.com and shared the necessary information to get a coupon for the medication. Cynthia explained that she could work with the family or pharmacy to get the script transferred to a different pharmacy if the family would prefer. I followed up with patient's father and shared with him the coupon for Walgreens that gets the medication down from $100 to $22.61. Per the father's request, I had the coupon text messaged to him through the goodrx.com website. The father agreed to call me back if he had any issues.
The father called back from the pharmacy. He said that the pharmacy said the medication order was wrong and that they could not honor the coupon. I advised father that I would speak with the ED follow up with Cynthia and have her contact him to resolve the issue. Cynthia called me back and shared that the information we sent the pharmacy was correct, but that the pharmacy had entered the information incorrectly. Cynthia said that she spoke with the father and was able to confirm that he had received the script at the discounted price and had no other issues.
