Cynthia Spencer, LPN
I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition for the compassion, professionalism, and life-changing care Cindy provides to her patients.
I first met Cindy during one of the darkest periods of my life. As a 100% disabled combat veteran suffering from PTSD, substance abuse, and serious mental health challenges, I had reached a point where I was struggling deeply and contemplating suicide. At a time when I felt lost and hopeless, Cindy entered my life and became a source of compassion, guidance, and stability when I needed it most.
What makes Cindy extraordinary is not simply her clinical skill, but the humanity she brings to nursing. She treated me with dignity when I struggled to find it in myself. She listened without judgment, showed empathy when I felt alone, and consistently went above and beyond to make me feel safe, understood, and comfortable.
Cindy never made me feel like just another patient. She made me feel like someone worth helping, someone worth fighting for. Her compassion and dedication played an enormous role in my recovery.
Today, I am proud to say that I am four years sober. I now work helping veterans, and much of the approach I use in serving them was learned from watching how Cindy treated me, with compassion, patience, empathy, and genuine care. She taught me, through her example, the power of truly listening to someone and meeting them where they are in their struggle.
Even now, I continue to meet with Cindy once a month, and I genuinely look forward to seeing her upbeat, positive energy. She continues to be a source of encouragement and support in my life, and I am grateful for the care and kindness she consistently brings to every interaction.
Without Cindy and the incredible support of the doctors and staff at VMHAP, I truly do not know if I would be alive today. That is not an exaggeration. The care I received changed the course of my life.
Nurses like Cindy Spencer do far more than provide medical care. They restore hope, preserve dignity, and, in some cases, save lives. Cindy did all of those things for me. Her impact reaches far beyond the walls of the clinic, because the compassion she showed me continues through the veterans I now help every day.
