Cindy is the lead nurse educator for CPR and emergency training. Recently, Cindy had a hospital team member scheduled to attend one of her BLS recertification classes. The team member was unable to attend the scheduled class due to a personal tragedy. In the past year, this individual's child died, and they performed CPR on their little one. The flashback (and memories) were too overwhelming for the individual to attend the scheduled class. They were a "no show".
When Cindy heard about this, she felt compelled to contact this team member. With kindness, heartfelt sincerity and compassion, Cindy asked the person in question if she might provide an alternative way for them to meet hospital standards in keeping her CPR current. Cindy offered to hold a private class for the team member when they felt comfortable to attend the training. The team member agreed and Cindy made a significant difference by using one of the "latex free" mannequins, which do not resemble a real baby. She knew that using an alternative baby mannequin would be less traumatic for the team member. Cindy, using her excellent clinical skills, helped the team member to achieve their CPR renewal with alternative teaching methods to meet the delicate needs of a distraught team member (and parent). Cindy went above and beyond and her genuine compassion was palpable to all who knew what she did in making a real difference.
