While briefly working with Dacier I had the honor of witnessing her deliver an unmeasurable act of loving-kindness to a patient whom I will refer to as Mr. Cee. Obviously this is not his real name, but referring to him as "the patient" just won't do.
Mr. Cee was admitted to 3W for over three weeks during the global pandemic. While the reason for his stay was completely unrelated to the COVID 19 virus, the safety measures in place to control the virus (i.e. no visitors) meant Mr. Cee was unable to see his wife of 64 years... a wife he still refers to as his sweetheart. It is important to understand that this loving couple has never spent one day without seeing one another. In fact, they even worked together prior to their retirement.
It was heartbreaking to watch Mr. Cee's jovial personality be suppressed by loneliness and a longing to see his sweetheart's face. So much so, that caregivers/providers from other disciplines made it a point to seek us out to express their concerns regarding the change in his emotional wellbeing.
Mr. Cee did not have an iPhone or a Facebook account, so video chats did not appear to be an option for most of those three weeks. However, Mr. Cee did have an android smartphone and Dacier, along with Mr. Cee's daughter worked closely together through multiple phone calls to set up a Facebook account for Mr. Cee and his wife. Dacier assisted Mr. Cee with his login ID and password as well as enabling Facebook messenger from his device. She stood by his bedside until the video call went through, ensuring an established connection.
When I came in that night, Mr. Cee was grinning ear to ear. When I asked him how it felt to see his sweetheart's face after three weeks, he replied in one word, "Wonderful".
Through the chaos of the COVID crisis and multiple floors merging and working together, Dacier went above and beyond her daily workload expectations.
