Dakota treats everyone kindly and equally. He engages them in conversation, meets them where they were at that moment, quickly establishes rapport, and puts them at ease.
I was fortunate to watch Dakota work almost every day of my eight-week orientation. Besides being exceptional at his job, he is caring, compassionate, and dedicated. He treats every patient with dignity and respect. Younger, older, regardless of background or medical history, Dakota treats everyone kindly and equally. He engages them in conversation, meets them where they were at that moment, quickly establishes rapport, and puts them at ease. Many times, when we would walk into a patient's room, they would see Dakota, and you could watch the relief come over their faces. Those who knew him were always happy to see him. Time and time again, I heard, "Dakota, I am so happy to see you!"

Dakota is a patient advocate. He teaches them about their IVs and explains the ultrasound pictures to interested patients and family members. He educates them on the care of their IVs and speaks with the bedside nurses to collaborate and coordinate IV access/care for their patients.

In addition to the patients, the staff repeatedly voiced their appreciation. "We are so grateful," "You are our hero," and "I can't thank you enough" are just some of the words of appreciation I heard time and again from the bedside nurses and Rapid Response Team.

Finally, Dakota precepts almost all new staff to the IV Access Team. It takes incredible tolerance, patience, restraint, and exceptional competence to teach and guide new staff through the process of learning to start IVs with an ultrasound. Dakota treated me with the utmost respect and was very encouraging throughout the ups and downs of my acquiring this new skill.
To watch Dakota work and interact with patients was incredible experience. He truly exemplifies all that the DAISY Award represents.

Dakota is passionate and very compassionate. He takes each difficult IV and lab draw with care, making sure each patient feels better after being poked. He is also kind and gentle and puts his best foot forward every day.
