Dale was able to stay and help in Portland for a few extra days to cover pediatrics and adult treatments while precepting the local RNs so that they were able to complete this complex treatment in the future.
Dale is one of the many special nurses on our internal Airlift travel team, supporting different Acute programs in and outside of our Division as they arise. I have worked with him for over 10 years and seen him go above and beyond the ask when it comes to his patients, but this is one more recent example of his ability to spread his knowledge and compassion across many lanes and programs that make him a true DAISY Nurse.
Recently, Dale was on assignment in our Washington acute program on day 6 of his 7-day stint. He was just finishing his second patient with an RN Trainee when he received a text From our Clinical Director that there was an emergency neonate that will need to be started on CRRT with a blood-primed circuit tonight at Randall Children’s Hospital. They had an RN working, but he had never started a blood-primed CRRT treatment on a baby before. The pediatric nephrologist said that it would be fine to wait for a couple of hours but it could not wait till morning and that the baby needed to be started tonight. It was 8:25 PM and he was finishing his treatment at St Joe's in Tacoma WA. He told them that if they could find coverage for him the next day in Seattle, that he would jump in the car and head down as soon as I finished his current patient. The local Hospital Service Administrator was able to move teammates around and get him covered for the next few days so that he could stay down in Portland and continue to help. It is a 2 1/2-hour drive from Seattle to Portland and he arrived at the hospital at 11:30 pm. Two Clinical coordinators were both there and we successfully started treatment without any delay or complications. They finished up around 2:00 am with the treatment and he was back at the hospital at 8:00 am to check on the pediatric CRRT and then started another 8-year-old on HD. Since they were able to find coverage for him in Seattle, he was able to stay and help in Portland for a few extra days to cover pediatrics and adult treatments while precepting the local RNs so that they were able to complete this complex treatment in the future. The parents of our 8-month-old neonate had covid and were unable to be present for this baby’s care as well as the baby having covid. This was just one great act of kindness and compassion that Dale has shown over the many years I have worked with him. He is truly a great clinician with the biggest heart for his patients and teammates going way out of normal day-to-day responsibilities to assure that our patients are taken care of even with staffing and other nuances that we have been working through the past couple of years.
