Dallas did everything in her power to make sure he was kept comfortable throughout our clinical day. Dallas and the rest of the students took it upon themselves to ensure the family had what they needed and ordered them pizza for lunch.
In this student's first clinical course, she encountered a patient who was nearing the end of life. This patient/family unit was experiencing significant challenges to the desired comfort and dignity. Despite her nursing inexperience, this student, with guidance from her instructor, proved herself to be a staunch advocate to ensure that the patient received the comfort care that the family was requesting for their loved one. She made a deep connection with the family who recognized that their loved one was being treated as more than a faceless patient, but rather a human being who needed help transitioning during this last phase of life. I know that her clinical instructor has also nominated her, but this student discussed the issue in a lab situation, and we felt that she was very deserving of this award.
***
Dallas is an outstanding student. She was in my clinical group over the summer for HPA-1. Dallas always made an effort to go above and beyond for the patients she was assigned to and never had a fear of learning new tasks or completing them. Dallas always arrived at clinical with a giant smile and spread sunshine and cheer throughout the day on the unit. There are two special situations that occurred during clinical, one being that a patient and her family nominated her for a hospital DAISY Award, and the second is her being an outstanding advocate for her patient and his family, as it was a trying time for all. This patient suffered a massive stroke with a brain bleed and was made comfort measures. Dallas did everything in her power to make sure he was kept comfortable throughout our clinical day. Dallas and the rest of the students took it upon themselves to ensure the family had what they needed and ordered them pizza for lunch. She is an exemplary student and will make an amazing nurse upon completing the program. There is no one more deserving of this honor than her.
