Dani Larsen has been everything that a DAISY Nurse should embody: caring, compassionate, heartfelt, great communication skills, and an advocate for her patients. She has gone above and beyond her job description and her role as a nurse. This day was the absolute worse day of my life. Prior to this day, I had had a few interactions with Dani while she was caring for my son, [patient]. In an attempt to build a care team of trusted nurses around him, we had asked her to sign up to work with him. We trusted her and trusted that she would keep our concerns as her own and take our wants and needs into consideration. She did exactly that. I was so worried about [patient]’s ET tube as he had self-extubated twice. She made sure that no matter who was in that room, they knew to be extra careful around it. I didn’t have to say a word. She just did it. Thankfully, she ended up signing up as a friend which made us extremely happy. Fast forward about one week. My son passed away at exactly 21 days old and 30 minutes. I had no idea that pain like this could ever exist. Dani sat down on the floor of his room and cried with me. She shared her experience with death and offered a listening ear. She was truly filled with compassion and empathy. I could tell she spoke from the heart and care about my son. Dani knew how much we were struggling, and, in that moment, she asked if we’d like her to sign up as a primary for his twin sister. With that, she gave us a sliver of comfort knowing that we had a nurse that wanted to take care of our daughter and a nurse that would be there with us every step of the way. I am forever grateful for the impact that she made on my life that day. She took a horrible experience and made it a tiny bit better by offering the comfort that she could. I could never put into words the impact that she has had on us. If any nurse deserves a DAISY Award, it’s her. Thank you, Dani, from the bottom of our hearts.
