Danica's determination to ensure this young family was well informed and equipped to confidently depart the hospital and care for their newborn merits recognition.
7 West was caring for the family of one of the first newborns of the year. The particular family had recently emigrated to the Columbus Ohio area from Haiti. This family, at that time, were completely non-English speaking, which as most nurses would agree makes patient / staff communication a challenge. This family was in a difficult situation, living and struggling to assimilate into a new country with multiple obstacles to overcome to ensure a bright future for their newborn. Like many who move to this country, this family was dealing with limited access to resources. Unfortunately this can be a very daunting reality especially when tasked with meeting the needs of a newborn.

This patient, in my honest opinion, had a stroke of luck on the first day of the new year when she had Danica as her caregiver. Danica's steadfast dedication to high quality and culturally sensitive nursing care is well known on our unit. This particular day is noteworthy as Danica went to exceptional lengths to coordinate this family's care with Social Services, Financial Services, the Medical Staff, and the various ancillary support staff. Her determination to ensure this young family was well informed and equipped to confidently depart the hospital and care for their newborn merits recognition. The example she set that day is exemplary and deserves recognition from her peers and her organization as this is the type of care that Ohio State should truly be proud of. Providing this level of care is no small feat when a person considers the volume of patients and higher level of acuity being seen on this unit during the Covid-19 pandemic. Dealing with Covid-19 can potentially make each day hectic and unpredictable and this day was no exception. Danica showed great calm and poise under pressure and that is a rare thing amongst the chaos we are all forced to deal with on a daily basis. Danica truly earned the respect of her peers that day, and as such I feel she is a true DAISY Nurse.
