My husband, K, was a patient on the oncology unit for almost 2 weeks. We have an 8-year-old son who was very scared and very sad during that time. When we visited K on New Year’s Eve, Danielle really took our son under her wing. She got him a stethoscope and let him scan K’s bracelet with it. She showed him the buttons to make the IV stop beeping. She gave him gloves and let him wipe my husband’s arm with alcohol before his insulin. She made the experience so much less scary for him. In fact, he wanted a job application at age 8! The unit was very busy, but Danielle went out of her way to connect with our son when she did not have to. K came home today, but our son wants me to take him back to Abington to see Danielle. He said Danielle should win the DAISY Award because “Danielle is a really good nurse and she does well with kids.”
