She approaches each interaction with the mindset that every child is a family’s most precious gift, treating them with the same compassion she would give her own.
I’m thrilled to nominate Danielle Marcello for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. She exemplifies what it means to be a true leader in nursing- one who elevates the practice of those around her. She inspires excellence, encourages professional development, and models exceptional care by leading with empathy, commitment, and a hands-on approach. Danielle’s dedication to children and their families is woven into every aspect of her leadership.

With a deep commitment to family-centered care, she supports children across the lifespan, from infancy through adolescence, in a variety of inpatient specialties, including pediatric oncology and critical care, and outpatient services for autism and cardiology, and effortlessly navigates the complexities of both chronic and acute diseases. She approaches each interaction with the mindset that every child is a family’s most precious gift, treating them with the same compassion she would give her own.

As a mentor, Danielle invests time in developing the next generation of nurse leaders. She is always willing to have nurses shadow her in a leadership role, providing real-world experience in decision-making, communication, and problem-solving. Nurses on her many units often remark that her presence on the floor makes them feel supported and motivated to give great care. This visible and accessible leadership style directly improves patient outcomes. By staying attuned to what is happening in each of her departments, Danielle identifies potential safety concerns, ensures that care standards are met, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to implement best practices.

Danielle actively supports nurses in advancing their careers, whether by encouraging them to get certified in their specialty, return to school, or pursue an area of interest. She recognizes that by supporting nurses in achieving their professional goals, she empowers them to become top performers. Her oversight across multiple departments allows her to create meaningful opportunities for pediatric nurses to gain experience and grow in areas aligned with their aspirations. Danielle shows her compassion for staff every single day. She never hesitates to step in wherever she is needed- whether helping a new grad nurse walk through med math, assisting with a boost in a full isolation room, supporting a complex patient discharge, or quite literally running for the code cart. No matter what the circumstance, she is present and ready to help.

Her support doesn’t stop with bedside nurses- she also mentors nurse managers and educators, offering guidance in operational decision making and ensuring each unit has the tools to excel. Anyone with a question about pediatrics knows to call her for help. Try grabbing lunch with her in the cafeteria, and you'll see why- she gets stopped so often for advice that she never gets to eat! I first had the privilege of working with Danielle in 2017, when I was the Clinical Nurse Specialist, and she was my Nurse Manager. When I had the opportunity to return to Atlantic Health in an entirely new role as a Nursing Coordinator for Data Analytics, I knew that working under her leadership would provide the support and guidance I needed to return to the workforce full-time. For these reasons, and many more, Danielle is an outstanding candidate for the Nurse Leader Award. She is an invaluable resource to her teams and the patients they serve.
