Each time Danielle came in the room at the beginning of her shift, Mom’s eyes would noticeably light up! When I questioned her as to why, she told me that with Danielle, she just felt she was in good hands.
Firstly, while I write this for one specific individual, I would be remiss to not acknowledge the entire staff of the third floor during Mom’s stay as well. Everyone within that staff took part in providing Mom with the best medical care (which honestly, given the hospital's most excellent reputation, was not a surprise) possible, while also treating her with a great deal of kindness and respect at very human level, making a very difficult time for her (along with my sister and I) easier to bare. My sincerest appreciation and gratitude for your actions, you made a great difference to another human being, well done! Now, having said all that, onto the individual that personifies the six (6) bullet points/examples listed on the left of the nomination brochure along my writing above about the third-floor staff (as she was part of that team as well), Danielle S! During Mom’s stay (20 days), Danielle took care of Mom for 7 or 8 of her shifts, each time Danielle came in the room at the beginning of her shift, Mom’s eyes would noticeably light up! When I questioned her as to why, she told me that with Danielle, she just felt she was in good hands (please do not infer from this that other nurses were not caring or good to her, just that Danielle was special for the reasons listed below), both physically and emotionally because of the way she talked with her as a person about things in life other than medical or her current condition, would wake her gently if she was napping to give her medications or take vitals, explained the medications being given to her and why, basically treating her not just as a patient, but as another human being that needed things other than medicine, things like human contact, respect, kindness, understanding, patience, and dignity. Danielle provided all those things and more to Mom and really made a difference in her stay at the hospital. While Danielle’s work with Mom was most experienced and felt by Mom, her character and actions had an impact on my sister and me as well. On many occasions, we were in the room when Danielle would explain things to Mom, but there were other times when we were not there, but Danielle would take the time when asked to go over them with us to make sure we were all good with the direction things were heading. If I am ever in the position to provide care for someone down the line, Danielle set a great example, extremely professional, yet with every essence of humanity! Thank you, Danielle!
