I can say unequivocally that Darcy saved my baby's life during an unexpected difficult labor and delivery. The birth of my baby boy had already deviated greatly from my plan by the time she started her shift and had reached a near-crisis point by the time I was pushing him out - with multiple de-cels and a long stretch of a decreasing heart rate. The room was chaos, but I'll never forget seeing her at the end of the bed and calmly instructing me to listen to her voice as she worked skillfully and quickly to pull him out in the nick of time. I'll also never forget her standing by my bed sometime after telling me I had done everything right and the interventions required to save his life were necessary and not my fault. This act of compassion alone would have had a lasting positive impact on how I will view the birth of my son, but she then visited us twice more over the course of our 10-day hospital stay to check in on us and the baby, to ask if we had any more questions about the birth and to make sure our collective healing was underway. Had a different CNM delivered our baby, I may have experienced regret or doubt about my delivery. Instead, I feel grateful and relieved that it happened the way it did.
