My friend M was admitted to your unit to undergo her long-awaited stem cell transplant procedure. She specifically requested my presence during her inpatient stay, not because she doubted the esteemed stem cell care team, but because she sought sisterly support and reassurance. While every member of the team contributed to making M feel special, I must highlight the admirable efforts of Darrick. His stature resembles that of a gentle bear and exemplifies the role of a nurse with his exceptional bedside manner. He sat beside M's bedside, addressing her concerns with compassion and explaining his plan of action with clarity. Darrick's presence, mannerisms, tone, and approach to M's care reassured her that she was in excellent hands.

I am particularly impressed by Darrick's consistency in providing exceptional care. At the beginning, during, and end of his shifts, he went above and beyond to ensure M's comfort and well-being. From emptying her urine hat and garbage to fulfilling each request for ice, blankets, and towels gracefully, no task was too big or small for him.

What truly sets Darrick apart is not only his compassion but also his outstanding attention to detail. He demonstrates proficiency in every aspect of patient care, ensuring that the work on his shift is coordinated so that M's medical needs are met with minimum interruption throughout the night. Moreover, Darrick possesses a remarkable ability to connect with patients not so much with chattiness but with effective listening skills level, fostering trust and confidence in his care. His genuine empathy and understanding create a supportive environment where patients feel valued and empowered in their healing journey.

Darrick embodies other extraordinary traits that are essential to the nursing profession. His resilience and dedication are evident in his unwavering commitment to providing the highest quality of care, even in the face of challenges and adversity. I asked Darrick if he would ask the PCA to come into the room and assist with a challenging situation. With a positive attitude and servant heart, Darrick returned to the room and, without any hesitation, took care of the matter himself. This experience was so uplifting not only to M but to me as well. This demonstrates his dedication to the patients and also his colleagues, fostering a culture of teamwork and camaraderie within the unit. I am particularly impressed by Darrick's professionalism and dedication to continuous improvement. He actively seeks feedback and opportunities for growth, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. Darrick's willingness to go above and beyond for his patients exemplifies the true spirit of nursing and serves as an inspiration to all who have the privilege of working alongside him.

As M celebrated her "new" birthday, she was doubly blessed to receive not only a new lease on life but also a new family of brothers and sisters to support her on her journey. Throughout our time on the unit, we received unprecedented care from all (nurses, aides, housekeeping staff, and more). As I leave the hospital on day +10 of her treatment, I am confident that this wonderful team will continue to deliver on their promise of compassionate and skillful care.
