Daryl Ann Ellison, RN
Daryl consistently role models compassionate care in her daily practice. With 35 years of experience as an ICU nurse, her compassion has never wavered. She is kind, patient, and deeply understanding, always taking the time to listen to patients and families and ensuring they feel heard, supported, and cared for during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Her calm demeanor and gentle approach provide reassurance in high-stress, emotionally charged situations.
Daryl’s compassion extends far beyond the bedside. During her own personal medical crisis with breast cancer, she once again placed others before herself. Rather than focusing solely on her own health, she reached out to me, her Patient Services Manager, with a heartfelt request to share an important message with the entire team about the importance of self-breast exams and early detection.
Even in a moment of personal vulnerability, Daryl demonstrated selflessness and advocacy for others, a true reflection of her character and her calling as a nurse.
Daryl has an extraordinary ability to form meaningful connections with patients and families.
One particularly impactful example involved a patient who was clinically declining. After careful discussion, the family made the difficult decision to transition the patient to comfort measures only. The patient’s final wish was to return home for hospice care, surrounded by family. Given the patient’s condition, there was concern she might not survive the transfer home.
Despite these challenges, Daryl worked closely with Continuing Care, tirelessly advocating to honor the patient’s dying wish. Through her dedication and persistence, the patient was successfully discharged home on a Saturday morning.
Although Daryl was not scheduled to work that day, she later called the charge nurse to ask whether the patient had made it home safely. This thoughtful gesture speaks volumes about the genuine connection Daryl forms with her patients and families.
Because of Daryl’s advocacy and compassion, the patient was able to spend her final moments at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Daryl consistently makes a profound and lasting difference in the lives of patients and their families.
Our unit regularly receives cards and letters of gratitude, and Daryl’s name is frequently mentioned. Families often describe her as a “true angel” — “kind, gentle, and deeply empathetic — with a calming presence during the most difficult moments”.
Many families have shared that Daryl “treated their loved one as if they were her own family”.
Through her compassion, advocacy, and unwavering dedication, Daryl provides far more than excellent clinical care. She offers comfort, dignity, and emotional support when families need it most.
