Patients and families compliment him effusively, and the VPS clinicians want to clone him.
David Frank, RN, is the calming voice on the other end of the phone when VPS patients or their caregivers call with an urgent issue. He’s the friendly voice calling to see how they’re feeling on their new medication, and he’s the concerned voice asking questions and providing education to ensure they are safe. Everyone loves David. Patients and families compliment him effusively, and the VPS clinicians want to clone him. An example that I think epitomizes David is the time he saw me struggling to get insurance approval for a continuous glucose monitor for one of my patients who, because of a stroke, couldn’t check his own sugars and, therefore, couldn’t safely take his insulin. David made daily phone calls to the patient to ensure he was staying well and coordinated between the case worker, the insurance company, and myself. It took close to a month and required two appeals, but David stayed the course and did not give up advocating for the patient. On the triumphant day, when the glucose meter finally arrived at the pharmacy, they were unable to deliver it. Undeterred, David drove there during his lunch break and delivered it to the patient personally. This is just one example of the kind of nurse David is. I am proud to nominate him for a DAISY Award.
