He took the time to understand my "history" and wanted to learn about me, validating what was important to me as his patient.
I am honored to nominate Nurse David Irizarry for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, skill, and dedication he brought to every interaction with me. He consistently goes above and beyond the expected standards of care, demonstrating not only clinical excellence but also a deep commitment to the emotional and human side of nursing. What sets David apart is his ability to make me feel seen, heard, and valued. As a patient, one can feel uncertain, fearful, and vulnerable. Sometimes, as a patient, we do not feel our concerns are "heard". I have had the opportunity to be a patient at WellSpan many times and to advocate for myself to come to the unit. This time, I had the pleasure of having him as my nurse. He provided me with comfort and reassurance with profound kindness and patience. He took the time to listen, explain, and advocate for me, ensuring that I felt supported and informed while I was in his care. His professionalism is truly remarkable. One moment that truly stands out to me is how he listened to my concerns and asked me questions about my chronic health conditions. This was my first interaction with him. I was very impressed! He took the time to understand my "history" and wanted to learn about me, validating what was important to me as his patient. This made me feel important and unique. He understood my concerns, and this made me feel deeply appreciative of his validating what others may not have cared as much about or even taken the time to really listen as he did with me. He made a lasting impression on me. While he may be new to the nursing profession, his compassion, listening skills, and commitment to excellence truly touched my heart. He is so deserving of this recognition.
