I have been a nurse for over a decade and an APNP for a little under a year. I say that in hopes that whoever reads this understands that I can understand and appreciate exemplary and working beyond what is ultimately needed in the care of a patient.

My mother has dementia and at times can get argumentative when confused, scared, or worried. Her anxiety was very high the day we brought her into the hospital for confirmation of her cancer. Dave stepped into the room, knowing her history, and her problems, and immediately looked her in the eyes, he kept eye contact and reminded her that he was there for her. He then went to touch her hand and reassure her that she was safe with him. His knowledge of working with patients with dementia was outstanding and well beyond any other team member I have encountered in working as my mother’s POA and guardian. Dave didn't ignore her but spoke to her, he reassured her, provided her support both emotionally and physically. He actively worked several times to redirect her agitation and provide humor in distracting her. He took time out of his day to make sure as he was a comforting person for her that she felt safe, supported, and happy. He showed expert skill in informing her of what they were going to do, what was happening, and why while non-verbally communicating with me to make sure I was on the same page.

Too often with dementia, the person receiving the care is passed upon in seeking information. He made her the star of the day. After the procedure, he moved her with me in the room for post-op follow-up. He arranged outside of protocols for me to be in when she was brought back in case she was scared, agitated, or confused. He also made himself available for that hour period of time for us to ask questions of him. Yes, this was part of his job but the detail he went into, and the advisement he provided were above and beyond. If that wasn't enough, he stopped other team members from waking her up as they normally would and allowed her the time to slowly come to. This made it easier on both her and me.

Dave’s expert knowledge of dementia, in working with patients while supporting family members made an incredibly hard day and experience so much easier. I wish that every person I encountered had the compassion, empathy, time, and passion to care for patients as he does/did. Medically he was fantastic but psychosocially he shined brighter than any star I have seen. While I was going to nursing school a professor I had said we do this to make a difference in someone’s life. At times this job is hard, challenging, and will force you to challenge thoughts, opinions, and norms but it will also transform your life if you allow it. She always said it will make you the best version of yourself in helping others and that there isn't a greater gift. Dave embodied that more than any other soul I have worked with or seen in action with my mother.
