My son was transferred from St John Oakland for viral meningitis and David was in the ER from the start. My son was combative and had to be sedated and placed on a ventilator. This was horrible to watch and I'm a nurse, so I understood most of what was happening. I can't imagine how hard this is on parents who don't know. David took the time to answer every one of my hundreds of questions, never seeming frustrated, rushed or stressed and continued to do so over the next three days. We were lucky enough to have great continuity of care as we've had David for 4 of our 5 days here so far. This wonderful nurse has gone above and beyond answering grandparents questions, involving siblings and cousins in his care, and coming up with very creative solutions to problems. He has had a very calming effect on my son when he was agitated on the vent, and after he woke up helped him deal with all the annoying women asking him to do things like brush his teeth and physical therapy. He was a great male role model for my son.
I'm sure if I told him this he'd say he was just doing his job. But trust me when I say he's gone above and beyond. My son made huge daily improvements under his care. He stayed late that first night to go to MRI with him and made sure all our questions were answered before he left that day, and every day. He always seems to have a knack for knowing exactly what my son needed when he needed it. He deserves some special recognition and was made for the job of a pediatric ICU nurse!
