I was admitted to the 5th floor from ICU, 14 hours after emergency surgery for a perforated duodenal ulcer I never knew I had. David was my daytime nurse for 2 or 3 days during my hospitalization. In short, he was amazing! He was always on time with my pain and nausea meds, was quick to call my surgeon or internal medicine doctor if I wasn't tolerating a new med very well. He was very careful monitoring my reactions to every med, as a result constantly checking on me. When my IV infiltrated after 3 days, David spent an enormous amount of time bringing in ultrasound equipment and even calling RNs from other units to help. He spent a great deal of time walking with me down the halls when I was on Morphine and thus a fall risk. He made sure I was using my spirometer correctly, and often. He took time to talk to me about how I would manage incision care, meds, and diet at home. He also, when he had time, just "talked shop" with me, to take my mind off my own pain and cabin fever that was setting in. I should add that I am not a "regular" patient. I was a firefighter/medic for 17 years and I worked as a critical care tech in ICU/IMU for 9 years. The quality of David's care, despite a heavy patient load, was equal to that of an ICU nurse-truly exceptional. Some RNs are technically proficient and friendly. David is technically gifted and treats his patients like long lost family members. Always smiling and making his patients smile too. David is a true DAISY Nurse.
