I found out he did not even work in the ER department. It was 3 am and he came from home to help.
I was taken to the ER for severe pain in my stomach. During my visit the nurses and lab were unable to draw my blood or start an IV. The situation kept getting worse, with more pain, and more needle sticks. It became so severe that I asked to be transferred to another facility. They brought nurses from other departments and even a doctor came to try to start an IV. I had enough at this point, thirteen sticks with needles and I was crying at this time. I told them only one more chance. My nurse told me they were going to call somebody in who was good at starting IVs. Fifteen minutes later, a nurse walked in with a smile on his face and began to talk with me and joke. He was holding my hand and assured me everything was going to be ok, one more stick and he promised I would not feel a thing. I laughed at that time still as nervous as I could be in the moment. But in the middle of my crisis, he put me at ease. Several jokes and laughter later I had a new IV all my blood was drawn. He even offered to start a second should something happen to the first one after he left. And I let him! He had the best bedside manner and IV skills I have ever seen. The reason I am nominating him is for something else though. I found out he did not even work in the ER department. It was 3 am and he came from home to help. I remember asking him why he came in, he said, "I was told you had been stuck 13 times and I knew I could help." When asked he told me he worked in the medical department and usually is here only 8 to 5. It was 3 am and he came in not even knowing me. I asked how I could repay or thank him, but he refused anything and said, "If you see me around town someday, say hi and let me know how you are doing." On one of my worst days, he came to my rescue.
