I am writing to formally recognize and express my deep gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Nurse Davina during my recent stay at Duke University Hospital. While nearly every member of the care team demonstrated kindness and compassion, Davina’s presence, skill, and humanity stood out in a truly extraordinary way.

Davina cared for me during the overnight shifts throughout my stay, and from the very first night, it was clear that she was someone special. She consistently went above and beyond, not only for me, but also for her colleagues. I watched her thoughtfully prepare for the incoming morning shift, ensuring that tasks such as IV drip changes were set up in advance so her coworkers could begin their day smoothly. Her teamwork and professionalism were evident in everything she did.

For me personally, Davina provided care that was both technically excellent and deeply compassionate. When I struggled with nausea but found the IV medication painful, she offered to dilute it, something I didn’t even know was possible. That small act made a tremendous difference in my comfort and allowed me to continue receiving the treatment I needed.

She also understood the emotional vulnerability that comes with being hospitalized. Knowing how important it was for me to feel clean before surgery, especially while feeling so sick, she made sure I had everything necessary to shower. She offered ice packs, heating packs, and other comfort measures without me having to ask. She seemed to intuitively know when I needed support, often appearing at just the right moment, even when I hesitated to use the call button because I didn’t want to be a burden. She always encouraged me to reach out if I needed anything, and I genuinely felt safe in her care.

The night of my surgery, I was determined to get up and walk, unaware of how late it had become. Davina honored my determination while still prioritizing my safety. She promised to return before shift change to walk with me, and she kept that promise. That reliability meant more than I can express.

I also faced challenges with lab draws due to difficult veins and a significant needle phobia. Davina supported my request to have labs drawn through my IV whenever possible. After a difficult interaction with one member of the IV team, I was anxious about advocating for myself again. Davina listened, reassured me, and helped me feel confident enough to ask for what I needed. Her advocacy made a world of difference.

Throughout my stay, Davina cared not only for me but also for my husband, who was navigating his own worry and exhaustion. Her compassion extended to him in a way that brought both of us comfort during an incredibly stressful time.

When I reflect on my experience, from the ER physician who treated me with dignity, to the surgeon who skillfully removed my gallbladder, to the many staff members who showed me kindness, Davina remains the person who made the most profound impact. She was, in every sense, a steady and reassuring presence during one of the hardest moments of my life. It truly felt as though she was an angel watching over us.

Duke University Hospital is fortunate to have someone like Davina on its team. Her skill, empathy, intuition, and dedication embody the very best of nursing. I hope she receives recognition for the extraordinary care she provides.
