It is my honor to nominate Dawn Fulton for the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of a career defined by unwavering commitment to nursing, her staff, and the patients entrusted to her care.
Throughout her years of nursing, Dawn has demonstrated what it truly means to be a nurse— not just through skill and knowledge, but through presence and an enduring dedication to others. What sets Dawn apart is her steadfast commitment to being there for patients and families during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, as well as ensuring her staff has the expertise to do so as well.
As a manager, she has mentored numerous nurses by teaching the art and skill of obstetric nursing, encouraging professional advancement, and spearheading programs that promote patient safety. She has cultivated the Maternal Early Warning Signs and Obstetric Sepsis Toolkits on her unit to identify, evaluate, and prevent maternal morbidity and mortality. She holds several nursing certifications and has used her involvement in these organizations to advance the unit she leads.
Her commitment to professional development has been exemplified with her staff by ensuring educational opportunities like Intermittent Fetal Monitoring classes through the Association of Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN), Advanced Life Support of the Obstetric Patient (ALSO), and STABLE programs. She has seen a 117% growth of the unit she manages and has risen to the challenges ensued by that expansion to make sure her staff is equipped with the tools to provide safe, effective care.
Over the course of her career, Dawn has also served as a source of strength and inspiration to colleagues. Not only through formal leadership roles, but through example— demonstrating resilience and an unwavering work ethic. She has helped shape the culture of care around her. Her actions, often unseen and unrecognized, have made a lasting difference in the lives of countless individuals.
Over her 41 years in nursing, Dawn’s legacy is measured in the trust she has built, the comfort she has provided, and the countless lives she has touched. She has dedicated her career to improving the lives of her patients. Dawn represents the heart of nursing— consistent, compassionate, and deeply committed over a lifetime of service.
For these reasons, I wholeheartedly recommend Dawn Fulton for the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.
