Our son was in the NICU for 2 weeks and 3 days. It was extremely stressful and already having a two-year-old daughter at homemade things that much more complicated, confusing, uncertain, etc. I wanted to breastfeed and took a course to better understand how to keep my production up and be more successful with our son than I was with our daughter.
Initially, our son struggled with latching and seemed to do best with bottles. I started to give up and suggested perhaps I pump and strictly feed him by the bottle, at least we would know what he is getting, he wouldn't tire himself struggling to latch and would still get my milk.
Dawn wouldn't let me give up while still allowing me to make the best decision for me, she suggested I stick with it a little longer and give him time to adjust and see where it goes. I was trying to do what was best for my son and she was pushing me to do what was best for my son and me! Her empathy, compassion, education, and support are a huge part of why I am successfully breastfeeding to this day almost 2 months later.
