Dawn Maiorano went above and beyond for a very young cancer patient at CTCA, making sure his last wishes were carried out. Dawn has the gift of compassion and understands the "Art of Nursing." She puts faith into action and works tirelessly to make sure patients and families are given what they need in difficult situations. She cares. Our patient D.F was a 28 yr old young man who was placed on hospice care when all of his options were exhausted. It was a very sad time for his young wife and 2 young children. He was working on building a new home for his family when cancer interrupted his life and brought him to CTCA. Over the months of chemotherapy treatment, he began to have more medical issues and the treatment was becoming increasingly difficult for him. Soon he would be admitted to the hospital here at CTCA where many amazing nurses and doctors attended to him. Of course, his case was especially difficult for all involved due to his age and the young ages of his children. His wife and his mom were very tearful and emotional when they were informed of realistic goals and plans. He was placed on hospice care. That is when Dawn who was following him during his admission, went into action. Dawn wanted to make sure he could arrive home to his new home before his death. Dawn moved heaven and Earth with her compassion, professional know-how, and faith. She worked all weekend and prayed the hearts of people that had already said "No" would be opened to early admission to the only local hospice care. He was able to get home, be in his new home and his own bed surrounded by his family when he passed. Dawn made this happen. Dawn is a nurse to be admired for her willingness to go the extra mile, understand suffering, faithfully serve, and be an inspiration to all of us.
