She advocated for me when I was unable to advocate for myself. She was patient and kind.
Dawnene Alexander saved my life. She was the nurse responsible for bringing me out of anesthesia after surgery. She noticed my breathing would stop while my body transitioned in and out of sleep. She knew that she needed to watch my breathing without distraction because if she waited for my oxygen levels to drop low enough to sound the alarms, it would be harder to stabilize my breathing. When she was given additional patients to care for, she asked for help to monitor me. She taught my family members how to keep me breathing. She gave me IV fluids to flush the anesthesia out of my body. She put extensive documentation into the computer so that my care transfer would be smooth when she went to lunch. She called the attending physician two times and my surgeon once to communicate my recovery. She advocated for me when I was unable to advocate for myself. She was patient and kind. She made small talk with my family and I which helped us all remain calm as the anesthesia was wearing off. Her voice was calming and soothing. She was by my side from 5 pm to 2 am. She helped me move to my new room as if we were family members. Her above-and-beyond care will always be remembered.
