Unless you meet him, you can’t appreciate his humor and the comforting feeling that he is taking care of you. That comfort got me through the three days I was in the hospital.
When I arrived, I wasn’t in much pain, but as the afternoon went on, the meds wore off, and the pain became almost unbearable. Dean was on duty, and his infectious, jovial personality helped me through the most excruciating afternoon and night of my life. I could see him at the desk from my bed, and he seemed to be looking at me constantly because when I looked up, he was in my room almost immediately to see what I needed. By night, he was making many calls to the doctor to get the authorization to give me morphine, and when it finally came, he injected it immediately. Three injections later, the pain finally subsided, and by Thursday morning, I was able to get out of bed and begin walking and moving to the chair and therapy. He again spent much time making sure I was comfortable and well-medicated. Unless you meet him, you can’t appreciate his humor and the comforting feeling that he is taking care of you. That comfort got me through the three days I was in the hospital. He wasn’t there on Friday, but I went home that afternoon feeling much better and relishing the time he spent with me. While I haven’t had much experience in the hospital, if all nurses are like Dean I wouldn’t mind coming back. He is a treasure and for 2 days made me feel special. When my daughter was visiting, he was sure to keep her informed about my treatments and issues and made her less anxious regarding my condition. I really can’t say enough about his care and knowledge of what to do for someone with a knee replacement.
