Dean provided excellent care for this patient when he took the time to address and troubleshoot the drain issue, and he took some time to talk and establish rapport to provide the care the patient needed. This helped calm the patient, and care was provided without stress.
Dean is a previous DAISY Honoree, when he worked at St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, WA, prior to coming to Western State Hospital. I can see why he was chosen and would like to recognize him again. Day in and day out, Dean has a consistently positive, can-do attitude about his work. He strives to provide excellent customer service to the staff and patients.
When I oriented to Employee Health, Dean was the best person to go to when I had a question. He explains things clearly, doesn’t rush, and is encouraging during the steep learning curve. Since then, Dean has oriented two more staff in our department and I have seen how positively they respond to his teaching methods. He also sets a great example, in that he follows all policies and procedures to the letter and uses all available references when he has a technical question.
In our department, we work as a team and often collaborate on how to problem solve. Dean is an active participant in these discussions and often has key insights to share. He is a good listener also, and is well respected by the group.
In addition to working as an RN3 in our department, Dean does overtime as an RN3 Medical Nurse Consultant. This enables him to stay current on his skill set and keeps him in touch with ward staff and the challenges they face.
Dean is an excellent example of an ideal WSH employee and so much more! He is kind, compassionate, excellent in communication and knowledgeable in his role.
Dean consistently exhibits professionalism at work, especially in interaction with the ward staff, providers, and colleagues. He maintains a great and amazing work ethic in patient care. He advocates for the wellness of not just one patient but the entirety of GCFE patients. He does this by keeping close track of patient infection control issues, especially COVID-19. He does not give any push back when his assistance is needed to care for COVID positive patients or any other medical condition. He is more than willing to assist especially the MNC team.
I would like to recognize Dean Paul because of his focus and strive to provide excellent patient care. One particular patient care that Dean really excelled in is when the MNC team needed extra help due to short staffing. Dean stepped up to assist the team with no hesitation. This particular patient that he cared for has been having issues with his JP drain. Dean provided excellent care for this patient when he took the time to address and troubleshoot the drain issue, and he took some time to talk and establish rapport to provide the care the patient needed. This helped calm the patient, and care was provided without stress.
Dean is a DAISY Nurse because of his patient care skills, is compassionate, and is an excellent role model for WSH employees.
Note: This is Dean's 2nd DAISY Award!
