I traveled the end-of-life journey with a dear friend. As my friend’s family was unable to be with her, Deb took it upon herself to call me at my friend’s request. This alerted me to the fact that death was nearing, and my friend wished to have me and others with her during her last days. Deb was my first presence as we began our vigil. Her top concern was always the comfort of the patient. She always treated her with compassion, dignity, and kindness. She explained the process of death as best she could and the plan of care that was prescribed. No matter how busy she was, she always managed to appear when she said she would. She always supported my friend’s end-of-life wishes. Although we were not family, Deb honored our presence and sought to keep us informed as she did with our friend.

I nominate Deb for the kind and compassionate care she gives her patients and the attention and support she gives to the family and friends of her patients who are nearing the end of their lives. She combines her medical skills with common sense to bring comfort and reduce fear during a stressful and emotional time. She stands out as an exceptional nurse!
