November 2011 Honoree
debbie humphreys, RN
Debbie is a charge nurse on the Mom/Baby unit and in this role regularly “transitions” newborns in the birthing room. Recently a family delivered a baby with known congenital anomalies, not expected to live. The baby survived delivery and Debbie cared for her during transition. Debbie very gently and calmly helped the mother to breastfeed her baby. She helped the mother and father bathe their newborn, lovingly instructed them in what to do to keep their baby comfortable. Her touch, her words, the hours she spent in nursing care were a healing presence for the family. She was never rushed, never impatient – only soft and reassuring. I could see the worried creases in mother’s brow relax so she could hold, feed and bathe her precious child. As another nurse in the room, I was blessed to be a part of this tender time.
Thank you, Debbie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
