It would have been very easy for Debbie to have finished her holiday and then had to self-isolate for 2 weeks, but she put the needs of her patients and colleagues before herself and even her own family.
Debbie as ward manager of Loxley had spent many hours preparing her staff and ward environment as they transitioned from family health to the CAS division, even working most of the first week of her annual leave to make sure that she was available for her team. She was hugely supportive to both her own staff and senior nurses in CAS who she kept well informed of any issues and the transition went very smoothly thanks to Debbie’s leadership.
Debbie then went to Portugal for a well-earned break, but unfortunately halfway through her week away, Portugal was put onto the restricted list due to Covid-19, which meant unless Debbie could get a flight home within 24 hours she was going to have to self-isolate for 14 days. Debbie, without a thought for herself, made the decision she had to return to the UK early with her husband.
She spent the next hours desperately trying to find a flight that was affordable. Eventually she managed to find a flight, which she had to fund herself, but it was not back to Birmingham where she had flown from and where the car was. Again Debbie was not going to be stopped. She contacted her daughter to pick them up from London and drive them back to Birmingham to collect their car, before then driving home.
