Deb is an unsung hero, who never seeks glory, who never asks for praise, but who comes to work happy each day and ready to give her all to her patients.
Deb demonstrates excellence every day through her compassionate care. From the moment she is introduced to her patients at shift change, Deb focuses her attention to her patients and how to progress their care. She works diligently with patients to keep them from developing hospital-acquired wounds. Her interest in wound care and wound prevention lead to the development of the MICU team that makes wound care rounds.
Deb comes in extra days to examine each patient in the MICU for wounds. She turns, inspects, and documents with meticulous detail about the wounds, ulcers, and incisions. She teaches other nurses about the nuances of wounds and how they can evolve, tunnel, or become infected. She has meticulous attention to detail in charting that has helped progress patients' healing and wellness. She has elevated the MICU's protocols and practices to a higher standard of care. She is a respected and valued MICU resource for wound charting, wound care, and wound prevention.
She has published papers on skin and wound care as well. During an inspection from the Missouri State Examiners just this year, they questioned her charting on a patient's wound. They believed her charting was not accurate. Without hesitation, she explained her reasons for charting it as such and cited her paper as a reference. The examiner was so impressed, he asked her for a copy of her paper with her autograph!
Deb also has held a patent for documenting pressure ulcer risks. In her patent, she developed a system of assessments and grading to ascertain the risks of developing wounds. She has worked tirelessly to pursue knowledge through self-study and practice. Her gift of intuitiveness has prevented many wounds from causing permanent damage to patients. Her love of patients has kept her at Barnes since 1986.
Deb is a preceptor, member of several committees, including the Unit Practice Committee and Wound Care Team. She is devoted to her profession. She is a knowledgeable teacher, mentor, colleague.
