More and more these days we have to care for patients in difficult situations such as drug addiction and it can be so easy to feel frustrated and just let these patients coast through the system and not take on their challenges. Today I was so incredibly proud to see one of the ACU nurses step forward and offer to take a challenging patient that most staff know well and would hope not to have as a part of their assignment. Not only did Deb offer to take this patient but she made a conscious decision to try and do everything possible to make the most of her time with the patient and help make a positive change. Once Deb completed the admission, she took the patient for a walk outside alone. She was able to get the patient to open up and Deb discovered things about the patient that no one else was ever able to discover. The patient can be very challenging and time-consuming. She has a very open conversation with the patient and was able to get the patient to see her situation with a different perspective and agree to a plan to help keep her and her baby safe and potentially put an end to the cycle of mistrust, manipulation, and chaos that put up a barrier between the patient and her health care team. This is what nursing is all about; never giving up trying to make a difference in someone's life.
