... Today I will share one story highlighting why she is so very special to our patients and our staff. However, please note that this story depicts only one little snapshot of her gentle, compassionate and insightful nursing abilities.

Last week, I called a home to check on a child post operatively, and spoke to the grandparent of a child who had come to Same Day Surgery for dental surgery. The grandmother told me her grandson was recovering well, and that she was pleased by all the kind nurses on our unit. However, she wanted to share with me she was even more grateful for the "guardian angel that cared for me while also caring for my grandson".

This sweet grandmother explained that she is the primary caregiver for her grandchildren, which is difficult as she is of advanced age and has many health problems including diabetes. She stated that on the day of the surgery, she was here a very long time, as she had to take public transportation to the hospital early in the morning, and the child did not have surgery until late in the day. "By the time I was with him in the recovery area, I was not feeling well. Debi recognized I wasn't well, and helped me so much by getting me to eat and took care of me. I don't know how I would have survived that stressful day without her. Plus, she also made sure I got a cab voucher, to help us get home safely. She was my guardian angel!"

I feel so thankful that Debi is part of our Same Day Surgery, as Debi is an incredible nurse and team member. She is constantly attuned to the needs of patients, parents, and coworkers. Debi doesn't even realize how special she is: sharing her expertise in nursing care, problem solving in difficult situations, and supporting others without any expectation of rewards. Taking the time to recognize this grandparent's health needs and assisting her comes second nature to Debi. She is truly an exceptional, caring, and "patients and families first" focused nurse!
