On September 4th, 1979, a young nurse began her career at East End Hospital. A recent recipient of a diploma in nursing from Carraway Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Ms. Debra Goswick began her career full of compassion and ambition.
Over the course of 42 years, Ms. Goswick has achieved so very much. From an academic standpoint, Ms. Goswick pursued continuing education throughout her career and received her Bachelor of Health Arts from St. Francis, and from UAB she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as her Master of Healthcare Administration.
From a leadership standpoint, Ms. Goswick became the head nurse of the orthopedic unit at East End. After a relocation to the new Medical Center East, she became the Nursing Director of Med/Surg. With the transition to St. Vincent's East, Ms. Goswick became the Administrative Director of Nursing and ultimately the Administrative Director of Nursing Practice and Finance.
Ms. Goswick has served through numerous advancements in healthcare and construction projects. From professional buildings to the North Tower, to the Cancer Center, and many more, Ms. Goswick has provided guidance and oversight of patient care through careful consideration and from a stance of always keeping the patient first.
Throughout her career, Ms. Goswick has been a beacon to nursing. She has cared for numerous patients, mentored immeasurable staff, and has served as a foundation to the nursing profession at St. Vincent's East. Ms. Goswick is essentially synonymous with our organization, and we should all feel honored to have worked with her for whatever time we may have had.
Let me now speak of another impactful individual. In late 1999, Mr. Patrick Barnes was admitted to a hospital and diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. Mr. Barnes ultimately succumbed to this disease, but the family was impacted by the overwhelming kindness and compassion expressed by the nursing staff to both Mr. Barnes and the family.
The family created The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses and The DAISY Foundation. Today, there are over 4300 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states as well as 27 other countries that honor nurses with The DAISY Award.
As I consider Mr. Barnes and the extraordinary career of Ms. Goswick, it is only fitting that the stories intertwine.
So today, for her distinguished career as a nurse in both clinical practice and administration, for her role-modeling behavior, and for her advocacy for nursing practice and advancement, I am pleased to announce Ms. Debra Goswick as St. Vincent's East first recipient of The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.
