Deb is a compassionate hospice nurse who has worked within the CentraCare system since 2008. She routinely goes above and beyond for her patients and her team. A recent example of her support of team members was that she took time out of her busy day to make an extra visit to a patient home so that she could teach a newer hospice nurse how to set up an automated medication dispenser. Pivoting on an already busy day is not an easy feat in home health and hospice, but Deb does these things regularly. She continually collaborates with the multidisciplinary hospice team and is a strong patient advocate who works tirelessly to make sure the patients on her caseload are comfortable. The acuity and complexities of hospice patients have escalated over recent years, and it seems to have some of the negative aspects of family dynamics, not to mention the increase in mental health concerns. Deb has handled these challenges well by continuing to meet the patient and family where they are at and offering ongoing education and support. She works with her team to develop a plan of care that maximizes the patient outcomes for comfort care. Deb works well with physicians, too. She offers suggestions for interventions she has seen work well in similar situations. Her experience in this work doesn't go unnoticed. I can't express enough how much I appreciate Deb's hard work and dedication to this special area of nursing. She is regularly mentioned by name in thank you cards and letters from patients and families. For all of these reasons and more, I believe Deb deserves to be recognized for her work by awarding her with the DAISY Award.
