When Debra entered my room for the first time, she emanated hope for me.
I am honored to nominate Debra for the DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional dedication, compassion, and clinical excellence in caring for patients facing cancer. Over the weekend, my dear wife convinced me to go through the Emergency Room of PVH. They determined from their findings that I have cancer of the liver. I was then admitted to PVH's Oncology floor. During my stay, I experienced many friendly and caring people in the hospital. Debra was out of the ordinary in her approach to patient care. When Debra entered my room for the first time, she emanated hope for me. When she asked how I got here and what I was feeling, she only concentrated on the hopeful side of my thinking. I am a few months shy of 80 years old, and I realize I am lucky at this point in my life. I have had a good life. My only fear is for my wife and for her continued happiness. I broke down at one point, and Debra reached over and held my hand, which very much comforted me. She said to concentrate only on what is positive that is ahead. She has a strong, caring personality. She consistently goes above and beyond the expectations of her role, combining her expert clinical knowledge with genuine empathy. Debra said that she is here for my wife and me. She follows through with what she has said. What truly sets Debra apart is her unwavering advocacy for patients and families. She takes time to listen, anticipate needs, and provide emotional support to not only her patients but also to loved ones navigating fear, uncertainty, and grief. Her calm demeanor, patience, and kindness create an environment of trust and safety.
