Deb listens to their stories, builds a trusting relationship with them, and this fills them with confidence and hope that change can happen.
When thinking about how to describe Deb Latella, the words “compassion and caring” come to mind. Deb works in the RRTP program. Not all nurses choose mental health nursing and the substance use environment of care, but Deb thrives in it. She loves her patients, and her patients love her. To be treated successfully, patients need to be recognized as people, not by their disease. Deb works with patients to help them achieve the highest level of health possible. Being a Veteran herself, she has great respect and gratitude for her peers. Deb listens to their stories, builds a trusting relationship with them, and this fills them with confidence and hope that change can happen. Deb highlights patients' strengths and empowers them to be the best version of themselves. As a new employee to the RRTP environment of care, Deb has taught me resilience comes in many forms. I have been a nurse for 27 years and just when I thought there was not much more to raise my eyebrows, Deb shared many stories about her time in RRTP as a nurse, some success stories, and some treatment challenges, but her overall message to me as a new RN to RRTP was, “each one deserves to be here and they deserve to be the best version of themselves.” Deb thank you for making each one of us the best versions of ourselves!
