After an accident, the patient came in as a full trauma. She was a mother. Due to her condition, her husband chose to not have the children view the body. Deena Schaeffer knew that during miscarriages, key chains are given to the families with handprints or footprints on them.
Deena was not able to get a hold of leadership but made the decision to go ahead and take the patient's fingerprints and send home a keychain card for her husband. She stated she made the best decision for the family and even offered to pay for these keychains if the foundation did not reimburse. She felt like the family would really benefit from having these mementos. She also took some locks of the patient's hair with the husband's permission for the children to have. I know it does not seem like a lot, but years later these children will treasure that fingerprint of their mother.
