She remembered all of the stuff I told her that first night and went out and bought it for me. She spent her own money on me just to help me get through my hospital stay.
I am now 14 years old. Earlier this year in February I was diagnosed with pneumonia. I had to go to the ER two times before being admitted to the PICU. The pain was already horrible and just the fear of being in the hospital was just as bad. The first night in the PICU was definitely the worst for me. I was in pain, uncomfortable, and definitely scared. I don’t remember much but I do remember Deidre.
I remember her going out of her way to find something to try and help relieve my chest pain. I also remember her talking me through it and asking me about myself. She asked me about my favorite animals, snacks, and much more. After the first night I don’t remember much at all, but I know I had surgery and had to have a chest tube. I was on a ventilator for a few days and when I woke up my hair was not on my side. Deidra said if by the morning no one could do it she would come up on her day off to do it. Another amazing nurse was able to tame it but Deidre still called and checked to make sure.
After some time, I was moved to a new floor. The pain was more bearable, but I was so scared to be on a new floor with new nurses. After a few days I was getting used to it and I was treated wonderfully but then I got a knock on my door. Deidre came into my room and brought me a present. She remembered all of the stuff I told her that first night and went out and bought it for me. She spent her own money on me just to help me get through my hospital stay. She sat and talked for a bit then she had to go but I will never forget that moment because just seeing her immediately calmed me down.
Overall, it was super hard to pick a nurse to nominate because they were all so amazing but their actions will not go unnoticed. I just feel that Deidre really went out of her way to help me through that hard and scary time and for that I am forever grateful.
Note: This is Deidre's 2nd DAISY Award!
