Several months back, Deidre cared for a critically ill patient who was nearing the end of her life. While reviewing her chart, he noted that the following day was to be her 75th birthday, and he decided he wanted to do something for her. He phoned a friend and asked to have a special cupcake delivered to him on the unit, and when it arrived late that evening, he surprised his patient with it. She was touched by this gesture, and so was I.
That night, and every night, Deidre demonstrates a high level of compassion and care for his patients. He could have just wished her a happy birthday in the morning, but he wanted to do more to recognize her special day. This had been a difficult time for this patient and her family, and they know that she will not have another birthday to celebrate. That Deidre went out of his way to ensure this birthday was special makes him a DAISY Nurse.
