The patient described Deirdre as a caring presence who made sure no one felt alone during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.
A grateful patient recently nominated Deirdre D’Antona, RN of Labor and Delivery, for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The patient shared that this was her first birth and that she and her husband were alone without family or friends nearby. She described feeling afraid, uncertain, and overwhelmed. From the moment Deirdre entered the room, everything changed. Deirdre explained each step of the labor process, answered every question, and guided her through positioning, breathing, and what to expect as labor progressed. She provided steady reassurance and anticipated needs before they were spoken.

When the baby’s heart rate began to show signs of trouble, Deirdre acted immediately and effectively, helping ensure a safe delivery. The patient shared that she felt supported on one side by her husband and on the other by Deirdre, who held her hand, encouraged her, and helped her stay focused and confident.

After the birth, while the team cared for the baby, Deirdre remained with her to ensure she was comfortable and emotionally supported. The patient described Deirdre as a caring presence who made sure no one felt alone during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.

In her nomination, she wrote that she will keep the photo they took together in her daughter’s baby album so she can one day teach her how kindness and hard work make a difference and how Deirdre served as a true role model.
