Deirrien immediately got down to eye level with him to determine what was needed.
My mom underwent quadruple bypass surgery followed by a procedure for respiratory complications. We are in week 4 of care in the ICU. During the second week, Deirrien was our dedicated daytime nurse for three of the most critical days. All of our nurses have been good, but Deirrien stood out as extraordinary. She was very attentive to Mom’s needs. She communicated with us about every aspect of care. At every point, she demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail.

One particular day, Mom was struggling and asked us to “Let her go”. It was very traumatic for my 86-year-old Dad. Our pastor was here praying, mom’s best friend was by her side, and dad was a mess. After the pastor finished his prayer, my Dad had an anxiety attack and lost control. He seized up and was babbling incoherently. Deirrien immediately got down to eye level with him to determine what was needed. The way she talked to him, the way she looked at him; it was incredible. While she kept him focused, others helped get him a wheelchair for transport to the ER. She stayed with him the whole way. Even assisting the ER staff. After all of that, she made sure I was ok. Then she returned to the ICU to make sure Mom was ok and to reassure her that Dad was alright. Throughout Mom’s stay in the ICU, Deirrien has been so caring, knowledgeable, and compassionate. She stands out as an exceptional nurse and person. We were all happy that she was with us today- the last day of mom’s ICU stay.
