I would like to nominate Dena Day, RN for this month’s DAISY Award. Dena is a phenomenal nurse who cares deeply for her pediatric and adult patients. Dena has many excellent nursing qualities, however, her love for teaching nursing students is well known on our unit. Everyone knows if Dena precepts a nursing student, that student will be well prepared to begin his or her career upon graduation. Although Dena precepted a nursing student who clearly did not demonstrate interest in learning last year, Dena willingly offered to precept another student this year. I can’t begin to describe how much she cares about teaching and the ownership she takes in educating students. It’s not easy to teach a student and manage a full load of patients at the same time. Dena does this with a positive and loving attitude. I’m always so impressed to overhear Dena explaining the rationale behind tasks and medication administration. I personally learn a lot from her each day! She asks her students thoughtful questions and ensures they have a full understanding of any topic they discuss. I appreciate her dedication to the future of nursing.
