I wholeheartedly believe Dena brings a vigor for patient advocacy and assertiveness to this job that is exceedingly rare. This is matched only by her immense clinical knowledge and refined clinical skill set.
I would like to provide you with unsolicited feedback regarding a recent experience with a colleague. While my overall impression of nursing staff at CRMC ED is positive, to say the least, the events on this day should not go unnoticed.
Dena Moore is consistently one of the strongest performing clinicians in this department and I have come to accept this as her baseline. Her actions that day showed me that she is beyond baseline strong and truly exemplary. Despite pandemic staffing issues, increased outpatient infusions, constant fielding of phone calls, two ICU admits, and a department full of patients, Dena stepped up and saved a young woman's life.
This was a woman who had a very confusing presentation and ended up in shock, required emergent surgical intervention. Dena's actions are absolutely responsible for saving this woman's life.
The diagnosis was not straightforward and Dena used her years of experience and never-give-up attitude to pry the much-needed history from the patient that led to the diagnosis and disposition. She then had the gumption to advocate for the patient and push rapid resuscitation forward with no assistance. She had to manage IV access, mass transfusion, multiple medications, and all of the standard perioperative measures anticipated with a shock patient. I am so grateful for the readiness of our Lab, Pharmacy, Anesthesia, Surgery, and OR personnel to expedite this patient's care, and truly believe Dena was the glue that bound this team together and drove it forward. The feedback I received from the OR staff, Surgeon, and Anesthesia was complete amazement with how this patient was packaged for surgery given their time in the department.
I wholeheartedly believe Dena brings a vigor for patient advocacy and assertiveness to this job that is exceedingly rare. This is matched only by her immense clinical knowledge and refined clinical skill set. This combination of knowledge, confidence, empathy, and skills to back it are unheard of - at ALL provider levels. I know these are traits you are well aware of, as you have the pleasure of knowing her for years before my experience, but I truly believe this patient would have succumbed to hemorrhagic shock in a similar hospital with standard care. I would trust Dena with my life and be relieved if she was my or a family member's nurse during a time of duress.
