The patient was very grateful to Denise and her team is so proud of all the actions she took to get the patient the care he needed.
Our PACT Team 1 Veteran has been getting treatment for cancer for a number of months. He was going to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and they wanted the Veteran to get a new treatment. The treatment was turned down by the VA as it was a non-formulary drug. Denise Hughes, the RN Care Coordinator, felt this was not in the best interest for the patient and felt it was not fair.
Denise found a way after exhausting all the protocols to get drug approved. Memorial Sloan Kettering was working on getting the patient into a trial study. She contacted Pfizer for samples and while it was in process. Denise contacted a doctor and got the patient into a VA Trial. The patient is doing well and has passed the 1-year mark.
