Denise is a positive person by nature and that shows in her attitude at work daily.
Denise has been an inspiration to me and my department. I have always admired her as a nurse because of her work ethic and quality of work. She is one of the most dedicated and hardworking people I have ever known. It is important to me that you know how Same Day Surgery (SDS) feels. Denise is a strong leader and leads by example. She is approachable and always willing to meet with you to discuss your concerns and suggestions for opportunities to improve the unit. She sometimes, of course, may have to decline the suggestion but makes you feel as if you were heard and your opinion valued. She is an effective heart head heart communicator. She, many times has to make very unpopular decisions that all the staff doesn’t approve of but she can stand her ground and defend her decisions because all her decisions reflect what is best for surgical services and FGH.

She is an out-of-the-box thinker and very creative in her approach to problem-solving. Problem-solving is definitely one of her best strengths. She is very smart and keeps herself updated in the medical world by researching to stay in touch with any information that may benefit surgical services and FGH. She has withstood a very stressful time since taking over this position. She deals very well with the occasional dissatisfied doctors and staff due to some of her decisions and policy changes but she carried on because she knew it was best for surgical services. She is a strong leader and presents with confidence but can be kind, caring, compassionate, and understanding.

I value her opinion and have learned so much from her and I have been a nurse for 35 years. She has encouraged me in my new role and has been supportive and a source of information and guidance with anything I need as my role as coordinator in SDS. Denise has brought some really good ideas, opportunities to improve our workflow to make us more efficient. She has made many changes in SDS and I feel they are all improvements. Denise cares about her staff and does everything possible to make sure we have enough help even if she has to work and help with patient care in SDS in a staffing crisis. She will come in early and stay late if needed in SDS during any staffing crisis. If we call for help she will make it happen or come herself. She communicates effectively with us in SDS and is always willing to talk with us if we have questions or issues. She works hard and expects all who work for her do the same.

Denise is a positive person by nature and that shows in her attitude at work daily. She helps us to remain positive and encourages us when we need it. Even when she has to deliver unpleasant news or makes changes she knows are not going to be popular she clearly communicates the information with heart head heart communication and listens to our concerns all the while being firm in her decisions without having a dictator-style approach. She is reliable and dependable and a great resource for all of surgical services. If she does not know the answer she will find someone that does. She can make decisions quickly when the need arises but also has the calmness to think on something a while to weigh all the options before delivering a decision. That takes patience and shows me she takes her decisions seriously because she wants what is best for FGH and surgical services.

She has shown to be an effective leader during the COVID-19 pandemic and has continually kept us informed and updated on any new policy changes. She implemented the remind app which has been very effective in relaying important information with all her areas in surgical services. She also uses the remind app to send messages of encouragement and thoughts for the day to keep our spirits lifted during this stressful past year. In closing, you can be assured Denise is doing a remarkable job of the huge undertaking of such a large area as surgical services, especially in such unprecedented times in the health care industry.
