Dennis Lucero, BSN, RN
Dennis demonstrated clinical excellence, empathy, and a true belief in his mission every day through the extraordinary care he provided to my husband after his third open-heart surgery. Following surgery, my husband experienced complications upon waking post-op, which became an incredibly frightening time for both him and our family. Dennis was exceptionally attentive and proactive, taking every precaution to ensure Ian was okay and helping coordinate the necessary evaluations to rule out serious concerns, including a stroke. His attention to detail, urgency, and calm confidence reassured us during one of the scariest moments of our lives.
Because of Dennis, we felt seen, heard, and confident that my husband was in the best possible hands. Dennis also served with tremendous empathy and compassion. The next day, when my husband was struggling with nausea, Dennis truly listened and took action to help get it under control. Instead of treating him like “just another patient,” he treated him like a person whose comfort and dignity mattered. His willingness to listen and advocate made a difficult recovery feel more manageable and helped my husband feel cared for, not just medically, but emotionally.
What stood out most about Dennis was his calming demeanor and sense of humor. Recovering from open-heart surgery is overwhelming, especially with countless drains and wires attached, yet Dennis helped make intimidating moments feel less scary. He encouraged my husband to get up and walk—something that was difficult but necessary for healing—and did so with patience, encouragement, and compassion.
