Derek was the right nurse for my mom once she was moved out of the ICU. He very quickly gained information about her, including things that weren't necessarily in her chart, (like the face her right arm and shoulder are painful and not useful to her for pulling herself up.) He always responded quickly and took the time to make sure she was as comfortable as possible.
Derek went out of his way to get her moved to a larger room to help accommodate the family that was with her. He had already secured another recliner for us when he came and asked if it would be easier for her and us to be in another room. Derek's concern for her family meant a lot to my mom.
We realized as he moved her that he had created extra work for himself as her room was much farther away from the nurse's station and would result in a lot more steps for him throughout the night. In all our interactions with him, Derek was friendly, kind and professional. Hearing him brief his replacement at the shift change was great evidence of his understanding and knowledge of my mother's concern and needs.
