Derrick cared for a young man (in his teens) who had severe heart failure and suffered a stroke overnight. The patient was being worked up to transfer to Greenville for a thrombo-embolectomy right at shift change. I came in to assume care for this patient as well as two other sick patients. Derrick stayed until nearly 10 AM after his night shift to ensure the patient and patient's family received the highest quality care during this devastating time. He communicated with doctors, nurses, case management, flight nurses, and another hospital to ensure everything was cared for so the transition to the new hospital would be as smooth as possible. He was extremely selfless, putting the patient and family's needs above his own, even though he was nearing a 16-hour shift. I am so thankful to Derrick for all of his help and so proud to say I work with such an amazing nurse. Thank you Derrick for all you do. Your care and compassion went above and beyond, and you deserve this recognition!
